Surprised! By Henri Rousseau
Made from fine bone china, these mini mugs are masterpieces – Literally! Using paintings from The National Gallery’s collection, Whitbread Wilkinson have married traditional art with functional design and, thankfully, the honeymoon period continues. The mugs also feature a coloured stripe inspired by a detail of the painting.
Whether Henri Rousseau was inspired by the jungles of Mexico or the botanical gardens of Paris is irrelevant, his painting ‘Surprised!’ is a fantastic depiction of a tiger hunting explorers. First exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in 1891, the figure of the tiger may have been based on a Delacroix print.
You don't need to live in a manor house or eat caviar to own one of these mini masterpieces. In collaboration with the National Gallery, Whitbread Wilkinson have created a range of notebooks, mugs, stationery and picnicware, depicting a selection of famous artworks. Whether its Van Gogh's Sunflowers that floats your boat, or Caneletto's Venice that rocks your world these classic yet contemporary products will definitely add an arty touch to any living space.
